Today in Human Geography, we went over our scavenger hunt
questions. I found that I did a pretty decent job on them. It did wake me up
though when Mr. Schick decided to throw the apple at me. I was not excepting
that at all. Then after we went over the questions, we watched a video about
the Lost Boys of Sudan. This video amazed me. I could not imagine walking from where
I lived to another country, when I was only 11 or younger. That was crazy to
hear that a boy who was only 11 years old was taking care of his younger
brothers. I learned that even if you live in the same country, if people
disagree they will cause war on their own people. I couldn’t believe some of
the harsh things they would do to the boys and girls. It is just awful to think
that you had to run from your parents to be safe and you never saw them again.

Today in the beginning of Human Geography, we talked about
what the population in the world is and how it is growing year by year. Then we
went on a website called CIA Fact book, which is a website that has information
about every country in the world. It is an extremely helpful website if you
have a project on a country, looking for information about the population, or
about anything else that is important that has recently happened. It also
showed us how that countries are ranked in different categories like the population
and the number of death that occur. In class, I also learned what the smallest country
is in the world. It is called the Pitcairn Islands and it is located near Australia.
It is crazy to think that this country only has 48 people living on it. We have
more kids in our freshman class then that country has people living on it.

Today in Human Geography, we talked about population and
migration. It is crazy to think that we have 7 billion people living on this
earth. I really enjoyed today’s lesson. It was just cool to see how big our
world is. It’s crazy to think that two babies are born every second. It was
cool to think that a new baby is replacing a person who has passed away. It was
also cool just to see how long we were accepted to live. I thought that it was weird
how women are supposed to live longer than men. It makes sense though because
men usually have to do more manual or hands on work. I think it is pretty cool
how diverse the United States is. We have people from all over the world and
from many countries like Mexico, Japan, and Italy. I am excited to learn about
this lesson because I am interested in this subject.

Today during Human Geography, we took a quiz on what we have
been learning since we started school at the beginning of the year. I believe
and hope I did well on the test. The multiple choice questions were pretty easy,
but the essay questions did make you think. My favorite essay question was the
one about Socrates. In this question you asked us how his quote, “The
unexamined life is not worth living”, affected us. This quote is exactly what I
believe in. It is saying that if you think too much about things you could be
missing out of huge opportunities in life. It also shows that in life it is ok
to have fun every once in a while. The hardest question on the test for me was
the second essay question. It just made me think about the concept and I had to
think about what I was going to say. I think I did really well and I cannot
wait to see what I got on the test.

Today in Human Geography, we saw every one slides that they
had made with their groups about globalization. It was nice to see what other
information the other groups had compared to mine. Some of the things that I learned
was that globalization is spreading in many countries traditions, economy, and business.
One group said that it was an easier way of life which in some ways it is, but
others it is not. Another pro people said was that it gives jobs to people
around the world. One group said that it was a pro to have cheap labor in other
countries, but others said it was a con. Another con people had said was that
the people who are working in these sweat shops had no healthcare or medicine
treatment. The workers were also abused and mistreated by their managers. Then
at the end of class we discussed what was going to be on our test on Friday.

Today in Human Geography, we talked about Nike video. We
figured out that even the changes that they made are still not fair. The
workers in the Nike factor our paid 3.70 dollars when they are really supposed
to be paid 4 dollars. In my opinion, it is just all wrong. What does not make
sense to me is that Tiger Woods gets paid hundred million dollars to wear the shoes
and clothes these workers spend long hours making. One thing that really made
me think was when you said for every second Tiger Wood plays golf, a work in Indonesia
could buy a house. This just shows how much money can make a difference in
life. Even though the workers in the sweatshops are getting paid better, I believe
that they should be treated better. Today in school, the assembly about Beth’s
story was truly inspirational. Just to see all the awful things that have happened
in her life and she is still positive. It is truly amazing that she is still
living after everything that she went through. Her story really shows that you
should never judge someone just because of the way they look.

Today in Human Geography, we watched a video about Nike and
how they are not treating there workers fairly. I opinion changed about Nike. I
never realized that someone would ever treat people so lowly. It made me feel
awful when I heard what the police would do to these people. They would hit
them and threaten to kill them. It just made me think about how lucky I am to
have what I have. All people should be treated equally no matter if they are
poor or rich. One thing that surprised me was when they would try to talk with
one of the owners of Nike and he would not even speak to them. To me it would
only seem fair if the owners of Nike would listen to them and what they were trying
to say. This video did touch me so thank you showing me this. After we watched
the video, I did realize that globalization is not always good. It can lead to
horrible things and effects people lives.

Today in Human Geography, we split up into small groups and started to work on a PowerPoint. I was partnered with Jordan, Hanna, Charlotte, and I. I am glad that I am working with them because I know that they will do their work. We were assigned to start working on a slideshow about globalization. We split the project into different parts for us to do. I looked up the definition on dictionary.com. The definition that I found said globalization meant to spread global across the world and it is worldwide integration and development. I also finished my slide and I put a picture on it. So far my group has completed five slides. We looked up the Pro and Cons of globalization as well. This weekend I am planning on working on it a little bit to. I agree with Mr. Schick that Wikipedia is a good website. It does has useful information.

Today for my blog, I wanted to start talking about 9/11 and
how it has made a huge impact on American culture. I do not remember it, but every
person who does remembers exactly what they were doing that very day. My dad
said he was at work and he remembers it was a beautiful day outside. I still
just cannot believe it happened. One day I would like to go visit the memorial
in New York. Otherwise, today in human geography we talked about
interconnectedness. Interconnectedness means that you are connected in some
way. For an example, we talked about how Christianity and how it is the world’s
most common religion. Christianity is not just in the United States, but it is
also in many other countries. We also talked about how people group others together
just because people made awful decisions. It is very common in the United
States that when we see someone who is Muslim we all just say they are terrorist.
I feel as a country it will be difficult to get rid of labels.

September 10, 2013
Today in Human Geography, we mainly discussed globalization.
Globalization is a connection with different parts of the world. We talked
about how American influence is spread across the world. An example of this is McDonald’s
which is in many different countries. Even though it is in different countries
they still have mostly the same menu. Like you were saying in Japan they may
have some sushi, but otherwise there food mostly consist of burgers and fries.
When McDonald’s went global, it changed the healthy living style in China.
Before McDonald’s, they were the healthiest countries in the world. Their food mainly
consisted of fish, vegetables, and rice. It also disrupted some of the Chinese customs
to. They used to all eat meals together and have certain ways of eating and
drinking food, but because of McDonalds, they can just grab food and go. This
just shows us how much of an influence the US has on many counties.

Today in Human Geography, we started off the class by
singing happy birthday to John. Then we were introduced to a new helpful tool
called Google Doc. Google Doc is used to make it easier to make documents with
other people. By using Google Doc, you will be able to work on a project or by
working with others without having to get together with other people. This will
be very using for class and school. If a teacher tell you to work in a group
and you cannot get together outside of school, you can use this. Today’s class
was really fun and I really enjoy Human Geography. The reason that I like it is
because it is just an easy and light class. By this I mean, that coming to this
class I know that we will not be writing the whole time. We can talk about it
and share each other’s opinion. I am looking forward to tomorrow’s class.

Shift Happens September 7, 2013
In Human Geography, we watched a video called Shift Happens.
In the video, it talked about how much more advanced China and India are than
the United States. One of the facts was that during the video, which is four
minutes and twenty two seconds, 60 babies were born in the United States, 244
in China, and 351 were born in India. This just shows that other countries are
much more populated then ours and it is still growing. It is just weird to
think about it because I always felt that our country was very large and was
ahead on electronics, but other countries are. Another fact said if Facebook
was country it would be the third largest country in the world. This just shows
us how big social media truly is in our world today. The last one that
surprised me was when they said that they are preparing students in our
generation for jobs that do not even exist yet, using technology that has not
been invented yet to be able to solve problems that have not even occurred yet.
This just made me realize that when I am older I could be working a job for something
that has not even been invented yet. This just showed me that our country is
going to grow, learn, and invent new things from generation to generation.

Today in Human Geography we had a very interesting class.
First, we started to talk about Socrates and how he looked. I learned that he
was a very ugly man and he would make fun of his own appearance. Then we
started to talk about same sex marriage. I believe that they should be able to
get married because they have any right that any other person has. Then we
started to get on the topic of in Texas you can marry your horse. Personally, I
just think that’s weird, but I believe it is true. We also tried to look up
websites to see if we could get accurate proof. By doing this we found that
some sights were published by some interesting named authors like Gizardboy.
Today’s class was very fun. One of my favorite things about Human Geography is
that it is not serious all the time. It is nice to have a class like that every
day. I look forward to talking about other interesting topics in class
tomorrow.

Today in class, we learned how to open Power School. I am
happy that we learned this so it will make it easy for us to check our grades
at any time. Then, we talked about our blogs and the vocab we had to look up.
We discussed as a class the definitions of the Greek words. Then we talked
about how the Greeks were the first ones to make government. They created the
first democracy. Mr. Schick then talked to us about how the Greeks used to
vote. People would go to angora, or a gathering place and stand on a stool.
They would talk to the crowd about what they felt needed to be changed with the
government. If they agreed they would say “I”. Then, I had to leave class early
because I had to get my picture retaken for my lunch card. I hope that I will
be able to get that soon so I can by lunch in the cafeteria. I am excited to
learn about the Greeks and for our next class.
